we took the last train home across the river as children we used to float 'til our bodies got tired the water got cold now the night has found us, you can't find your keys so we crawl through the window and bruise all our knees and i loved every moment bed-ridden for weeks put your fingers in my mouth and never take them out heard there's thunder and clouds, but it's nothing to worry 'bout heard there's sunlight 'bove the trees and grass it's gotta reach so bring it down on my face and the ground underneath let it pour through the window on our eyelids while we sleep fill my ears with your darkest secret and i'll fill yours with the promise i'll keep it and we will be early birds the movement of lips before words be the whisper you wish you heard if only you'll let me be yours
2.
if there's no such thing as coincidence tell me, sweet heart, what is this? that wakes me up in the morning keeps me warm in the night you can not tell me it don't exist despite my efforts, all my thought out plans something's happened between us, time has linked our hands and now i'm calm in the morning dream of you each night and i'm gonna tell you just as soon as i can and if you were here with your face to mine i'd whisper sweet little secrets to you all the time i'd wake you up in the morning hold you close in the night and i'd make you certain that everything is fine honey, don't be frightened, don't be scared should the sky start fallin' i'll be right there
3.
what's the worst that could happen? you might fall in some dirt before you start laughin' you might lose some time, you might bend your spine but the answers will come as soon as you stop askin' and when the plot unfolds, if it's heavy and cold i promise you this: you won't be alone and if the hand that you're dealt doesn't suit you well it can be our secret, i won't ever tell like little devils, like little demons that know where to find you, in bed not sleeping and they make your back ache, they make your bones shake honey, that's just bad dreamin' and when you open your eyes, turn 'em back inside you can watch your tears scatter, what 'em run and hide you can tear them down, throw them away or underground and no no matter what happens it's something lovely you've found it's something lovely you've found
4.
don't take me home and if it's gone i don't wanna know if i lost something so dear in all those years spent growin; cold so just hold me close i ask so little and you know you've got it all to give but you don't, no, you don't and there's a bird caught in the frame i think he's singing my name but he's lied so many times right to my face so put your car keys down i ask so little, just stick around you can make the time and i've got some shit that i need to figure out when these walls cave in i guess i'll pack my bags and then i'll begin it's a long hard walk but i'll do it and i'll do it again there's a bird free from his cage the song he's singing's the same and you've lied so many times right to my face to my face yeah, you've lied so many times right to my face
5.
at the moment i'm about to shout you put your hand over my mouth you said, "you'll wake the neighbors you're gonna make 'em hate us you're gonna wake your best friend" but he's not sleeping, oh no honey, i don't like this weather tell me what it's like in the desert "there there are eyes to see and i've got breath for you to breathe" well, god damn, that sounds like just what i need my bags are packed and i'm runnin' away but what will happen when all this fades? so many memories i've been trying to save god, don't let me forget how i wanted to stay and how you wanted to stay and how i wanted to stay and how you wanted to stay and in the silence i can't tell the difference between your breathing and the window letting the breeze in and i'd listen to find it if i thought it mattered but i know now that it it just doesn't matter and i hope when morning finds you she's got a gentle touch and i hope the dirt we do it doesn't fuck you up too much
6.
i had a dream i was young again and you were too and i was so in love with you but you were indifferent and you were cold i guess you did not change as you grew old and you cut my fingers and put my voice on the rocks and now i can't talk, i can't talk to you still want a drinking problem? still got black hair? oh, i wish i was there, i wanna comfort you now you're a green light burnin' across the bay i see you every day, i see you every day oh, darling, if i had money a whole lot of cash now, tell me, would you come back? i bet that you'd come back i guess i tested your patience and i guess you tested mine and every time a little piece of me died oh, kitty, are you still married? and are you still in love? or did you give up? i hope that you gave up so, we won't sleep alone but we won't sleep together i've learned that no one is perfect that you couldn't be better and in the city lights i'll kiss you goodnight
